cross platform mobility has an achilles heel

Billboards for iPads have been multiplying like rabbits. At every big intersection and train stop here in Chicago, I see ads for them plastered everywhere. And now that Jobs, the Steve Jobs biopic is out, I’m sure Apple products will see another spike in sales.

With that said, Android tablets have been carving out a sizable slice of the market. What they have been lacking in are quality apps. In a recent survey done by Canalys, they found that “18 percent of the top 50 paid apps available through iTunes were available for Android, but not optimized for tablets.” This lack of cross-platform functionality in the app marketplace has left a sizable void for Android users.

As Google continues to make improvements to their Play Store, and as Android security gets better, the thirst for better performing apps is going to rise. Especially as these Android-based devices begin to gain larger shares of the overall device market. Cross platform mobility is a lot less effective when the functionality void is ignored.

What This Means For B2B Apps

When it comes to B2B mobile enterprise apps, this functional Achilles’ heel could cost you a large sum of money in the future. With the steady and aggressive increase in Android-based smartphones and tablets, investing in a solution that is solely iOS-based can lock you into something that has no flexibility to change with the times.

Technology is constantly changing, so remaining rigid is one of the most harmful decisions you can make. Investing in a mobility solution that allows you to move between devices will let you flow with the changes in technology. This not only saves you money in the long run, but will also keep your employees as productive as possible.

Flexibility is one of the most important factors when it comes to investing in a mobile enterprise solution. No one can 100% predict what’s going to come next in the tech world, and no can predict what is going to catch on. Even though you may not need your app to work across multiple devices now, it doesn’t mean you won’t in the future.

Search for a solution that offers uniform cross-platform mobility. Your customers and employees who utilize your enterprise apps are going to appreciate their work a lot more when they can use their preferred device and operating system. Whether you use iOS, Android, or Windows 8, explore less restrictive options first and avoid a cross-platform mobility mishap.
